Inside-Out Youth Leadership, Sri Lanka

Fifty students from the Institute of Technology, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka attended a special one-day "Role of A Youth Worker" capacity building training program, ran by the Professional Youth Workers' Association (PYWA) of Sri Lanka on 7th October 2018.

The program was based on the "Ocean in a Drop: Inside-Out Youth Leadership" curriculum introduced by Pravah and the Commutiny - the Youth Collective, India.

Facilitated by Wathsaridu Karunarathna and Chathura Pieris from PYWA, the training program included these sessions:

Understanding 5th Space; Role of a youth worker; Anatomy of discrimination; and Leadership styles.

The facilitators guided participants using the following learning principles:

  • Make the learner responsible for learning;

  • Introduce challenges to draw learners out of their comfort zones; and

  • Build a win-win, fun informal atmosphere during learning.

By the end of the day, participants increased their self-esteem, enhanced leadership skills and widened their sense of responsibility, taking the role from self to society.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Indeed, in their journey to transform the world, young people will find that at the same time they are themselves transformed.
